Jacquelynn Engel, McPherson

? Services for Jacquelynn Engel, 81, McPherson, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Congregational United Church of Christ in McPherson. Private family inurnment in McPherson Cemetery will precede the service.

Mrs. Engel died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at Cedars Health Care Center in McPherson.

She was born April 23, 1923, in McPherson, the daughter of Jack and Anna Mae Conn Oelrich. She graduated from McPherson High School in 1941. She attended Principia Junior College in St. Louis from 1941 to 1943. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from McPherson College in 1965 and a master’s degree in journalism from Kansas University in 1972.

Mrs. Engel was a homemaker. She also taught at McPherson schools from 1966 to 1987 and taught journalism classes from 1987 to 1990 at KU, where she was an executive secretary for the Kansas Scholastic Press Assn. She taught at Midwestern Journalism Camp and at workshops at Kansas State University, Fort Hays State University and Bethany College. She also taught workshops in Colorado, Indiana and Missouri.

She was a member of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston and the Christian Science Society in McPherson. She was also a member of the National and Kansas Education Assns.; Delta Kappa Gamma Society; Phi Delta Kappa International; Soroptimist International; Kansas Association of Teachers of English; Kansas University Alumni Association; McPherson College Alumni Board; the National, Kansas and Columbia Scholastic Press Assns.; the Journalism Education Assn., where she served for two years as state director; Association of Education in Journalism; Kansas Press Women; McPherson Opera House Company, and the McPherson Area and Kansas Retired Teachers Assns. She also received many awards in journalism and teaching.

She married Don Raymond on July 14, 1945, in McPherson. She later married V.O. Engel on Aug. 3, 1973, in McPherson. He died Jan. 16, 2004.

Survivors include a son, Dennison Raymond, North Reading, Mass.; a sister, Georgana Crabb, McPherson; and five grandchildren.
