Topeka ? Kansas University’s tennis squad started its spring season with a 4-3 victory Saturday over Illinois State at Wood Valley Racquet Club.

Stephanie Smith, Luiza Loureiro and Ashley Filberth each won a singles match for the Jayhawks, and the doubles teams of Christine Skoda/Loureiro and Smith/Lauren Hommell were victorious.

“I was very proud of the way our team played today,” KU coach Amy Hall-Holt said. “We played with a lot of heart and battled for every point.”

KU will play host to BYU on Saturday at the Overland Park Racquet Club.
