Petty propels De Soto

Wildcat senior solid in win over Baldwin

? The Baldwin High girls basketball squad probably is getting sick of this. For the second straight game, an opposing player played the role of Superwoman.

On Monday against rival Ottawa, Cyclones senior Kelsie Studley put on the cape with 20 points to lead her team past the Bulldogs, 44-36.

In Thursday night’s 55-47 loss to De Soto, the heroine was another senior, Amy Petty. Her performance was even more remarkable given what she did Tuesday against her school’s fiercest foe, Mill Valley.

Petty, a guard who is averaging about 17 points a game, mustered only six points — all from the free-throw line — against the Jaguars in a 46-35 loss. Two nights later, she exploded for a career-high 30 points.

What happened?

“I had a lack of concentration, I guess,” Petty said of Tuesday’s aberration. “I got real nervous before the became because it’s our rival … I was just ready to play. I knew I could play better.”

Added Wildcats coach Dwight Spencer: “I told her after the (Mill Valley) game, ‘You have a habit of bouncing back.’ I didn’t expect this, but I’ll take it.”

In the first quarter, Petty could do no wrong. At one point she scored four baskets in a row via smooth layups and jumpers.

With 2:46 to go in the quarter, Baldwin coach Eric Toot had seen enough, but Petty’s shooting wasn’t his main grievance. He was livid because of the Bulldogs’ lethargic rebounding effort after De Soto grabbed five consecutive offensive rebounds.

“First half, we just didn’t have enough energy, and that shows up on the defensive boards,” Toot said.

After outscoring the Bulldogs 20-9 in the first quarter, the Wildcats took a 33-20 lead into halftime. Spencer called the first half “our best basketball of the year.”

Then roles switched. Baldwin (6-3) had the energy, catching De Soto (6-3) off guard.

“Second half, we decided to come in and forget about the scoreboard and play hard,” Toot said.

Junior Katelyn Miles led Baldwin with 14 points.

De Soto will next play in the Louisburg Tournament on Monday against Belton, Mo. Baldwin will travel to the Wellsville tournament for a first-round matchup Tuesday against K.C. Piper.
