Boston College fights off feisty Villanova

Eagles remain unbeaten; Duke survives Miami

? Boston College has played a lot of close games this season, and they all turn out the same way.

Overtime against Holy Cross. Double overtime against Yale. A buzzer-beater to defeat Kent State. And now some late free throws to turn back Villanova on Wednesday night.

“I know we’ve put ourselves in that situation, and we’ve had success,” coach Al Skinner said. “But we don’t want to play that way.”

Jared Dudley hit two free throws with 5.5 seconds left, giving No. 9 Boston College a 67-66 victory over the Wildcats.

Dudley scored a career-high 36 — topping his previous best of 24 by one at halftime — and Boston College (15-0, 4-0 Big East) scored the last seven points of the game to remain one of four unbeaten teams in the country. Craig Smith scored 12 and was the only other player in double figures for the Eagles.

Villanova (9-4, 2-3) held a 66-60 lead with two minutes left before being shut out down the stretch. The Wildcats were the beneficiaries of a shot-clock error in the final minute, but failed to capitalize and lost for the third time in four games. They play Kansas University, another unbeaten, on Saturday.

Randy Foye scored 22 for the Wildcats, but he missed the front end of a one-and-one with 39 seconds left and then front-rimmed an off-balance jumper — over Dudley — at the buzzer. Mike Nardi scored 12 but missed a free throw with 25 seconds left with a chance to give Villanova a three-point lead.

“It’s all us. We can’t blame it on anybody else. We had the shots at the end,” Foye said. “If I had made both of my free throws, and Mike made his, the game would have been over.”

No. 4 Duke 92, Miami 83

Boston College guard Sean Marshall, right, drives to the hoop past Villanova defender Randy Foye. The Eagles survived the Wildcats, 67-66, Wednesday night in Boston.

Coral Gables, Fla. — Shelden Williams scored a career-high 30 points, and Duke shot 61 percent to end a surprising run by ACC newcomer Miami.

J.J. Redick added 21 points for Duke (14-0, 4-0 ACC). The Hurricanes (12-4, 3-2) had won their past three league games, but they fell behind early and trailed by 19 with 10 minutes left.

Robert Hite, the Hurricanes’ scoring leader with an average of 19 points per game, was held to six on 2-for-7 shooting. His first points came with 61/2 minutes left in the game when Duke led by 15.

No. 6 North Carolina 77, Clemson 58

Clemson, S.C. — Rashad McCants scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half, and North Carolina overcame a sluggish start.

Early on, McCants and the rest of the Tar Heels (15-2, 4-1 ACC) looked as if they were still thinking about Saturday’s loss at Wake Forest. They committed 16 turnovers in the first half and went through a pair of scoring droughts that totaled almost 11 minutes.

But McCants hit consecutive three-pointers to close a 19-7 run at the start of the second half that put North Carolina ahead to stay, 46-34, with 12:07 left.

Kentucky guard Rajon Rondo (4) faces the defense of Mississippi's Londrick Nolen (11) and Tommie Eddie. The Wildcats won, 53-50, Wednesday in Oxford, Miss.

While the Tar Heels hold a 50-0 edge all-time over Clemson (10-7, 1-4) in Chapel Hill, N.C., this was just their second victory in the last five meetings at Littlejohn Coliseum.

No. 8 Kentucky 53, Mississippi 50

Oxford, Miss. — Freshman Rajon Rondo scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half, and Kentucky rallied from a 15-point deficit.

Ole Miss had the ball trailing 51-50 in the final moments, but Kendrick Fox missed a three-pointer with 19 seconds to play, and Kentucky’s Patrick Sparks hit two free throws to extend the lead to three.

Londrick Nolen’s desperation three-pointer at the buzzer bounced off the back iron, giving the Wildcats (13-2, 4-0 SEC) their second big comeback victory of the season and ninth victory in 10 games.

Tommie Eddie scored 14 for the Rebels (11-7, 2-3).

No. 14 Louisville 92, East Carolina 41

Louisville, Ky. — Reserve guard Brandon Jenkins scored a career-high 14 points, and backup forward Otis George had 13 points and 10 rebounds, leading Louisville. Taquan Dean scored 13, and Juan Palacios had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Cardinals (15-3, 4-1 Conference USA). Moussa Badiane had 16 points and 16 rebounds for the Pirates (5-12, 0-5).

No. 20 Cincinnati 80, Charlotte 58

Cincinnati — Nick Williams scored 19 of his career-high 22 points in the second half, steadying Cincinnati.

Jason Maxiell had 23 points, and Eric Hicks grabbed 13 rebounds as Cincinnati (15-2, 4-1 Conference USA) rebounded from a three-point loss to Louisville on Saturday.
