Thomas A. Maher, St. Clair, Mich.

? Mass of Christian burial for Thomas A. Maher, 87, St. Clair, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Clair. Burial will follow in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery.

Mr. Maher died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, Kan.

He was born Oct. 23, 1917, in New York City, the son of Walter and Irene Flannigan Maher. He graduated in 1935 from Yorktown High School in New York and in 1939 from the University of Notre Dame. He later graduated from Harvard Business School and the Detroit College of Law. He lived in Grosse Pointe and the Kansas City area for many years. He had been visiting Lawrence for the last several months.

Mr. Maher served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a probate judge in Michigan and retired in 1987. He was a member of the Notre Dame Alumni Assn., Irish Lawyers Assn., Michigan Bar Assn. and St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He had been a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Roeland Park, Kan., and St. Clair Catholic Church in Grosse Pointe.

He married Florence Ridley on June 27, 1941. She died Feb. 2, 1994. He married Elizabeth “Betty” Loznak on Dec. 27, 1997, in St. Clair. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include four daughters, Donna Peake, Naples, Fla., Elaine Riordan, Lawrence, Loretta Chudy, Leawood, Kan., and Lorraine McLaughlin, San Antonio; two sons, Thomas, Cincinnati, and William, Sterling Heights; two stepdaughters, Karen Loznak Ferguson, New Castle, N.H., and Kathleen Loznak McGovern, Grosse Pointe Park; two stepsons, Charles Loznak, Portland, Maine, and Richard Loznak, St. Clair; a brother Robert, New Fairfield, Conn.; 31 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

A son, James, died earlier.

A parish rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Overland Park, Kan., Michigan Relief Services or Detroit Rescue Mission and Ministries. They may be sent in care of Friederichs Funeral Home, 214 Trumbull St., St. Clair, MI 48079, or Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
