A Journal-World newspaper carrier reported a fire early Monday morning in a southern Lawrence apartment complex and then went door-to-door trying to alert residents.

Kristie Helm called 911 shortly after 5 a.m. after she saw smoke coming from a top-floor apartment at Colony Woods, 1301 W. 24th St.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical responded and put out the blaze, which was contained to a balcony. The balcony was damaged enough that it will have to be replaced, firefighters said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. No one was injured.
