Author to lead quilting workshop

Author Terry Thompson will lead a quilting workshop from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.

The cost is $25 for Kaw Valley Quilters Guild members and $30 for nonmembers.

Participants will have a choice between applique by the yard or piece by the yard projects. Patterns for Grace Snyder’s Rose Wreath and Rocky Road to Kansas will be provided.

Photography contest deadline is Jan. 28

The deadline to enter the Five-State Photography Competition and Exhibition is Jan. 28.

The contest is open to any photographer living in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Colorado. Any photographic process is eligible as long as it is original work created during the past two years and has not been exhibited in a previous Five-State exhibition.

All entries for the three categories — nature, people and open — must be framed, mounted suitably for gallery presentation with an appropriate secure hanging device attached.

Entries should be sent to Hays Arts Center, 112 E. 11th St., Hays, 67601. A $20 fee will allow two works to be entered. Two additional works may be entered for a fee of $5 each. Checks should be made payable to the Hays Arts Council.

Lawrence students tour with Baker choir

Baldwin — Lawrence residents Carlo Washington and Michael Auchard are among 42 members of the Baker University choir touring England and Italy during the university’s Interterm Performance Tour.

The choir left Baldwin Jan. 6, for the 14-day tour, which features performances in Grantham, England; Camigliano, Italy; and the Basilica of San Benedetto in Norcia, Italy. Other highlights include a choral workshop with the Welsh National Opera, and guided tours of such sites as Cambridge, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Sistine Chapel.

John Buehler, chair of the Baker music department, is leading the tour. Interterm, the three-week period between winter break and the spring semester at Baker, allows students to expand their education through travel opportunities and creative, often nonconventional courses.

Writing contest accepting entries

The 16th annual Kansas Voices statewide writing contest is accepting entries.

Postmark deadline is March 15. Entry fee is $3.

Entrants must live in Kansas. There is no limitation on subject matter. Writers competing in the youth division must be under 18 or enrolled in high school.

Prizes will be awarded for adults and youths. For adults, $275 will be awarded for best poem and best short story. For youths, $75 will be awarded for best poem and best short story.

Winners will be notified by April 7 and will be honored and invited to read at a special presentation. The reading will be April 30 at the Winfield Chamber Office in Winfield during Kanza Days.
