Eudora boys struggle against Broncs

Lack of inside presence sends Cardinals to 70-62 setback

? Eudora High boys basketball coach Scott Stein spent time after his squad’s 70-62 loss to Spring Hill on Friday night giving his players individual evaluations.

Afterward, he had a few thoughts on his team collectively, as well.

“These are very good kids, and there’s a ton of adversity,” Stein said. “You have to find a way to overcome the adversity that we’re experiencing right now.”

In the short term, a three-game losing streak is haunting the Cardinals. In the long term, an evident lack of size is the cause of most of that aforementioned adversity.

The Cardinals (2-5) matched up nicely with the Broncos (2-5) on the shot chart. Eudora was 23-for 42 (54.7 percent).

Spring Hill hit 25 of 46 field-goal attempts (54.3 percent), but the similarities end there.

Spring Hill forward Dustin Smith outmuscled the Eudora frontcourt for 27 points with layups and relentless putbacks.

When the Broncos outscored the Cardinals 22-9 in the third quarter, most of those points came from Smith, acting as a bulldog in the paint.

“We just had no answer for him,” Stein said of the sophomore.

Before Spring Hill went on its third-quarter romp, the Cardinals had a halftime lead of 31-30.

EHS junior guard Mark Abel battled Smith for the title of the game’s highest scorer.

Abel finished with a team-high 26, including four three-point shots.

Eudora senior forward Jeremie Bryant backed up Abel with 16 points mostly as the result of close-range jumpers.

Bryant and Joe Kaup (six points) basically were the only inside presence for the Cardinals.

Stein said his team had to have more from his post players.

“You have to attack the bucket,” Stein said. “It has to be inside-out. We never could go inside and get things to happen.”

Stein said senior Brendan Jackson, though he was held scoreless, had one of the best outings out of any of the Cardinals because of his perpetual hustle plays at the end of the fourth quarter.

“I like the contact,” said Jackson, the former Eudora running back who wasn’t afraid of a few floor burns and elbows from the Spring Hill guards.

So where does a team go from here?

“We just need to put a full game together,” Jackson said.

Added Kaup, “Us being small … there’s going to be some losses, but we have to put that behind us.”

Eudora next will play Leavenworth Immaculata in the Tonganoxie tournament on Tuesday.

In other Tongie tournament first-round games: Atchison faces Silver Lake; Pleasant Ridge takes on Lansing; and Tongie meets Jefferson West.
