If you like cold weather, you and the other polar bears will love today — arctic-like temperatures, snow flurries and sub-zero wind chills are in the forecast.

“We are very cold,” Tim Reith, 6News meteorologist, said this morning. About 9 a.m., the temperature in downtown Lawrence was 6 degrees.

“And thanks to a 12-mph wind, it feels like it is 9 degrees below zero,” Reith said. “You will have to deal with sub-zero wind chills this morning and, in the afternoon, single-digit wind chills.”

Today’s highs for the Lawrence area will be 15, with winds 5 to 10 mph from the north and northeast, making it feel like it is only in the single digits, he said. Skies will be partly cloudy today. The average high for today is 38. The average low is 20.

“Just when you think it can’t possibly get any colder, we head into Saturday,” Reith said. Saturday’s morning low will drop to 3 degrees, with wind chills between minus 5 and minus 10, he said. Some snow flurries are expected.

“Make sure you take some precautions,” he said.

The arctic conditions will hang around through the weekend. Saturday’s high will be 14, with winds north to northeast, 5 to 12 mph. Sunday morning low will be 7, with the high reaching 17 Sunday afternoon.
