Maurice Weinberg

? Services for Maurice Weinberg, 85, Coffeyville, were Tuesday at Penwell-Gabel Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel in Coffeyville. A celebration of his life will be in the spring in Coffeyville.

Mr. Weinberg died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.

He was born May 20, 1919, in Coffeyville, the son of Nathan and Zillah Weinberg. He attended Coffeyville Community College.

Mr. Weinberg served in the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. He owned Weinberg’s Western Wear in Coffeyville. He served on the Coffeyville School Board. He was a trustee of Coffeyville College from 1967 to 2003.

He was a founding member of the Kansas Association of Community College Trustees and was named the first recipient of the Coffeyville Community College Lifetime Achievement Award. He also was named to receive the American Community College National Leadership Award. He received the college’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2002, and the college’s occupational building was named Weinberg Hall in his honor.

Mr. Weinberg served on the Board of Directors of the Coffeyville Chamber of Commerce, and vice president of Kansas Junior Chamber of Commerce. He held a variety of leadership roles in both the Kansas and Coffeyville Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of Coffeyville Regional Medical Center Endowment Committee and served on the board. He was chairman of Coffeyville Salvation Army and a member of Lions Club. He received the Sertoma Service to Mankind Award. He was a board member of New Beginnings, Alzheimer’s Assn. and a member of Coffeyville Country Club.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma, of the home; three sons, Jeff, Lawrence, Thomas, Haiku, Hawaii, and Michael, Grove, Okla.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

The family suggests memorials to the Maurice Weinberg Scholarship Fund, sent in care of the funeral chapel, 2405 Woodland Avenue, Coffeyville 67337.
