Weather cancellations, delays

January 4, 2005


The following are cancellations, postponements or delays brought upon by today's weather conditions.


  • The Lawrence City Commission meeting scheduled for tonight has been canceled. (See story.)
  • Non-emergency Kansas University employees are being excused, beginning at 3 p.m. For information about the Edwards Campus in Overland Park, call (785) 864-8499. A decision on the schedule for Wednesday will be made by 6 a.m. Wednesday and will be announced through the local media and (785) 864-SNOW (7669).
  • All Lawrence city recreational facilities were closed at 3:30 p.m. (See story.)
  • Bruce Flanders, director of the Lawrence Public Library, said the library closed at 4 p.m. today.
  • All classes at the Lawrence Arts Center are canceled for tonight.
  • Independence Inc., has canceled all evening activities for tonight.
  • Dance City, Spirit of Kansas, has canceled all classes for this evening.
  • All school-related activities scheduled for this afternoon and evening in Lawrence Public Schools have been canceled due to the forecasted winter storm. Classes have been canceled for Wednesday.
  • Basehor-Linwood School District is canceling all activities this evening. It dismissed school early today.
  • Tonganoxie School District dismissed at 2 p.m. today and canceled all evening activities.
  • American Legion Post #14 meeting for tonight has been canceled.
  • The Prenatal class tonight at Lawrence Memorial Hospital has been canceled.
  • The Heartland APA Pool League (throughout the city) has been canceled for this evening.
  • Strategic Learning Center, session cancelled for this evening and all day Wednesday.
  • Ninth Street Baptist Church, all activities for tonight and Wednesday have been canceled.

¢ Perry-Lecompton School District.

¢ Wellsville School District.
¢ Piper School District.
¢ Eudora School District.

Other cancellations:

  • Lawrence Chamber of Commerce officials have postponed their annual Legislative Priorities Breakfast, which was scheduled for Wednesday morning at the Dole Institute of Politics.
  • A meeting between downtown merchants and the city's Task Force on Homeless Services scheduled for Wednesday morning has been rescheduled for Friday. Winter weather forced the need for the cancellation. The meeting, which will discuss homeless issues in the downtown area, will be 8 a.m. on Friday at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.
  • Ballard Community Center will be closed Wednesday.
  • Jazzercise 9 a.m. Wednesday class has been canceled.
  • The Task Force on Homeless Services Focus Group meeting scheduled for 8 a.m. Wednesday at the Lawrence Arts Center has been canceled and is rescheduled for 8 a.m. Friday at the Lawrence Arts Center.
  • Lawrence Jayhawk Kennel Club Dog Obedience class registration for Wednesday night will be postponed until 7:15 p.m. Jan. 12.
  • Cottonwood, Inc. will not open till 10 a.m. Wednesday due to inclement weather. Community van routes will not run. Updates can be found on their Web site at
  • Senior Legislative Forum planned for Wednesday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital has been canceled.
  • Preschool and dance classes Wednesday at Lawrence Arts Center Preschool and Lawrence Arts Center Dance, are canceled.
  • Endacott Society (KU retired faculty and staff) weekly meeting is cancelled for Wednesday.
  • First Southern Baptist Church Wednesday evening activities are canceled.
  • One of a Kind Day Care will be closed Wednesday.
  • Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services offices in Douglas, Leavenworth, Franklin, Wyandotte, Johnsons and Miami counties will be closed Wednesday. Persons needing to make a report of abuse or neglect of a child should contact local law enforcement or call 800-922-5330.

Earlier cancellations today:

  • Veritas Christian School dismissed students at 11:20 a.m. today.
  • McLouth School District dismissed students at 1 p.m. today.
  • Oskaloosa School District dismissed students at 1 p.m. today.
  • Perry-Lecompton School District dismissed students at 1 p.m. today.
  • Santa Fe Trail School District dismissed students at 1:30 p.m. today.
