KUMC cancer institute tapped for info service

Kansas City, Kan. — The Kansas Masonic Cancer Institute at the University of Kansas Medical Center has been tapped to operate the information service for the National Cancer Institute.

The Kansas institute was one of 15 organizations selected for a new contract to operate the Cancer Information Service, effective Jan. 15. It also will operate the CIS Contact Centers, which provide information to the public through a toll-free telephone service.

Created in 1976, CIS is the federal government’s public outlet for the latest, most accurate cancer information.

“The CIS is a critical resource for the American public and we feel privileged that we have been selected to provide this service to even greater numbers of citizens,” said Roy Jensen, medical doctor and director of KMCRI.

CIS trained cancer information specialists man a toll-free telephone service in English and Spanish (1-800-4-CANCER). The KUMC contract will total more than $16 million over five years. The medical center has been a CIS site since 1988.
