Culture to supplement Lawrence plant

Serologicals' Hybri-Cyte designed for research

Serologicals Corp.’s production center in Lawrence is about to get more work, even as the plant’s formal validation remains more than three months away.

Atlanta-based Serologicals announced Monday that it was introducing Hybri-Cyte, a new cell culture supplement to be used for research and bioprocessing. The product does not include fetal bovine serum, thereby eliminating fears of contamination through mad cow disease or other complications.

The supplement’s main ingredient is Ex-Cyte, another Serologicals product that already is the world’s top-selling serum-free supplement for cell growth. The Lawrence plant will be the company’s top Ex-Cyte producer once validation is complete, scheduled for late May.

“This is good for Lawrence,” said Bill Davis, a Serologicals spokesman. “The more Hybri-Cyte we sell, the more Ex-Cyte we’ll need to produce.”

The Lawrence plant, with 26 employees, is a part of Celliance, a Serologicals division created late last year to oversee contract research services and handle the company’s expanding research, development, manufacturing and commercialization efforts for cell culture supplements and diagnostic products.

Hybri-Cyte is expected to be the first in a line of new products being designed by Celliance to meet the growing needs of research operations and development companies, Davis said. Hybri-Cyte is designed for use on cell lines derived from mice, rats and rabbits, the most common lines used in research and bioprocessing.

Later this year the company intends to release Onco-Cyte, for use with cancer cells. Others in development would focus on hamster cells and human embryonic kidney cells.

David Dodd, president and chief executive officer of Serologicals, said that Celliance was formed to build on the strength of Ex-Cyte’s intellectual-property position. Next up: using Celliance to expand “brand identity” for products made using Ex-Cyte as a backbone.

“We believe it is off to an excellent start,” Dodd said.

Overall, Celliance oversees more than 300 employees in six locations, including the $28 million plant in Lawrence’s East Hills Business Park. The others are in Kankakee, Ill.; Milford, Mass.; Morgan Hill, Calif.; Toronto; and Livingston, Scotland.
