Music festival adds five acts

The Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival announced this week that five more acts are being added to the lineup.

Alt-country group Wilco headlines the bunch. The addition of the band sets up an intriguing opportunity for an Uncle Tupelo reunion, considering Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy and Son Volt singer Jay Farrar — both former members of the iconic group — are each playing the festival with their solo projects. New Orleans jazz-rock act Galactic returns for the sophomore event, as do New York songwriter Martin Sexton, roots instrumentalist Xavier Rudd and Nashville country ensemble Old Crow Medicine Show.

KPR comedy show set for Feb. 19

“Right Between the Ears,” Kansas Public Radio’s comedy show, will fire off another broadside of topical take-offs and satirical songs at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Feb. 19 at Liberty Hall, 644 Mass.

The 8 p.m. show will be broadcast live on KPR stations and at http://kpr.ku.edu

The show is expected to include spoofs of the Iraqi election, President Bush, the British Royal Family, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Spongebob Squarepants and the Weather Channel.

Consort to perform at Spencer museum

The Spencer Consort will present “Bach Arias and Baroque Instrumental Quartets” at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Spencer Museum of Art.

The consort performs on period instruments, including wooden flutes, early oboe, recorders, cello and harpsichord from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Featured works on the program will include arias by Johann Sebastian Bach from his St. Matthew Passion and Christmas Oratorio. The soloist will be mezzo-soprano Katrina Mitchell.

The consort will perform works for three treble instruments and basso continuo by Joseph Bodin de Boismortier, Johann Gottlieb Janitsch and Antonio Vivaldi. The first two works are sonatas for equal instrumental parts, but the Vivaldi is a concerto in which the solo recorder part will be played by Susan Cannan. Baroque flutists John Boulton and Joy Laird will play a duet by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach.
