STANFORD, CALIF. ? No one on Kansas University’s baseball team knows sixth-ranked Stanford better than KU pitcher Kodiak Quick.

Unfortunately for the undefeated Jayhawks, the 6-foot-1, 210-pound junior will not be available for this weekend’s three-game series against the Cardinal, which begins with an 8 p.m. contest tonight at Sunken Diamond.

“It was a gentlemen’s agreement that I wouldn’t be able to pitch in this series,” said Quick, a former Stanford closer who transferred this fall to KU.

“It’s a little disappointing because it would be a lot of fun to go against my old teammates,” said Quick, a Belton, Mo., native who compiled a 2-0 record with 15 strikeouts as a starter during KU’s recent road trip in Hawaii. “It will still be a lot of fun to get back there and see all the guys and share a few laughs.”

KU coach Ritch Price’s 6-0 team is looking for more than that, especially considering that the Jayhawks were swept last season at Stanford — including a 10-6 setback in the series finale, a game in which KU held a 6-3 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning.

Price — who agreed with good friend and Stanford coach Mark Marquess to not pitch Quick this weekend — said he wouldn’t make any guarantees about not using Quick as a closer again.

“I’ll tell you one thing: we’re not going to give up leads like the one we had last season at Stanford,” said Price, whose squad is off to its best start since he took over the program in 2003.

The Jayhawks completed a six-game sweep of Hawaii-Hilo late Wednesday night by pounding 14 hits and rolling to an 11-1 win.

Quick pitched six solid innings, allowing six hits, one run and no walks. Freshman left-handed pitcher Logan Murphy hurled the last three innings, allowing one hit and earning a save.

Junior outfielder A.J. Van Slyke went 3-for-4, scored two runs and drove in two. Leadoff hitter Matt Baty went 4-for-5, drove in two runs and stole a base.

Freshman second baseman Ryne Price keyed a five-run first inning with a three-run homer over the right-field wall. Freshman outfielder John Allen added a two-run single in the first frame.

Kansas also had a five-run seventh inning that featured a two-run single by Baty, who now has eight RBIs on the season, and four Vulcan errors.
