FSHS girls put end to skid

? Coming off back-to-back losses last weekend, Free State High’s girls basketball righted the ship with a 38-31 victory Monday night at Shawnee Mission West.

“We don’t feel like we played very well Friday and Saturday,” FSHS coach Bryan Duncan said of losses to SM North (59-44) and Lawrence High (45-40). “We really needed this win to get things going in a positive direction down the home stretch. Winning solves a lot of problems.”

Jamie Stanclift led the Firebirds with 13 points and nine rebounds. Jenna Brantley added seven points, and Binaka Okwuone had eight rebounds.

“It was a very good win,” Duncan said. “They came in with same record as we have, and they’ve played everybody tough like we have. They also have young players, so I think it was a game with both teams heading in the same direction.”

The Firebirds trailed 12-8 after the first quarter before their zone defense sparked a 9-2 run to take a 17-14 lead by halftime.

“Defensively, we went to zone in the second quarter,” Duncan said, “and that really helped us out.”

Free State (6-9) will play host to Leavenworth on Friday.
