Capitol Briefing

68 Days – The state Supreme Court has given lawmakers until April 12 to produce a constitutional school finance plan.

THURSDAY’S HIGHLIGHTS

Kansas University officials were warmly received during a subcommittee budget hearing. Chancellor Robert Hemenway asked the committee to support Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ spending plan for universities, which includes a 2.5 percent pay increase for classified employees and an additional one percent for faculty.

Media organizations, including the Lawrence Journal-World, testified in favor of legislation that would require the full disclosure of public employees’ compensation. The bill has been called the “Lew Perkins provision,” named for the Kansas University athletic director. The Journal-World won a lawsuit last year requiring KU to disclose Perkins’ full compensation.
