Lawrence High senior Ian Handshy wasn't among the hundreds of Kansas high school football players signing national letters of intent Wednesday.
Handshy instead accepted an offer to join Kansas University as a preferred walk-on.
"I had some really nice offers from other schools, especially Washburn and Baker," said Handshy, a 6-foot, 210-pound Shrine Bowl selection who played running back and linebacker for the Lions. "But I decided I wanted to be a Jayhawk. I really want to see if my talents will take me far enough to get playing time."
Handshy, who also was contacted by several junior colleges, likely will take a red shirt his freshman year.
"I think I'll be on defense, but as a walk-on you really have no idea," said Handshy, who rushed for 806 yards and eight touchdowns.
