Dada distraction

It's one more reason for people to wonder what the heck is going on in Lawrence.

Maybe it’s good to see that our mayor has a sense of humor, but a proclamation on the agenda for tonight’s Lawrence City Commission meeting seems to cross the line into foolishness.

Mayor Boog Highberger plans to sign a proclamation declaring “International Dadaism Month” in honor of the post-World War I artistic movement. Lawrence residents may wonder why this action has any relevance to our city, and a closer examination of the proclamation fails to answer that question.

Among other things, the proclamation says, “Dada is a virgin microbe which penetrates with the insistence of air into all those spaces that reason has failed to fill with words and conventions.” The mayor’s proclamation, which would appear to fall into that void, concludes with a z-filled chant and lists 13 random dates from early February through October as “International Dadaism Month.”

OK, we can take a joke. The city obviously passes proclamations to commemorate a number of barely significant events, but the Dadaism measure seems sort of disrespectful to the city’s entire proclamation process.

It will take only a minute for commissioners to approve this proclamation tonight, but it seems the time could be better spent.
