Stewart, USC stun Heels

? Lodrick Stewart and Nick Young each had 18 points to lead Southern California to a 74-59 victory over No. 17 North Carolina on Wednesday night.

It was the eighth straight victory for the Trojans (8-2) and their first over a ranked opponent since March 2004.

Stewart – twin brother of Kansas University’s Rodrick Stewart – was 7-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-5 from threre-point range. His three with 2:40 to play gave the Trojans a 68-57 lead.

Gabe Pruitt had 16 points, and Ryan Francis added 12 points and seven assists for USC, whose last loss was to Oral Roberts on Nov. 23.

David Noel led North Carolina (6-2) with 19 points, and freshman Tyler Hansbrough had 16. North Carolina’s other loss was to Illinois on Nov. 29 in a rematch of the Tar Heels’ victory in last season’s national-championship game.

USC started the second half with an 11-4 run, punctuated by a fall-away three-pointer by Young that made it 41-39 with 15:23 left, the Trojans’ first lead since early in the first half.

Stewart made consecutive threes to give USC a 52-47 lead with 10:29 to play. He later scored on a layup to cap a 17-4 run that put USC on top 63-51.

Durham, N.C. – J.J. Redick scored 18 points to lead Duke past St. John’s. Freshman Josh McRoberts tied a season high with 12 points, Sean Dockery also had 12, and Shelden Williams added 11 points and 10 rebounds for Duke (11-0).

Green Bay, Wis. – Shannon Brown scored 26 points, and Maurice Ager and Paul Davis each added 25 in the Spartans’ ninth straight victory.

No. 11 Louisville 78, Coll. of Charleston 63

Louisville, Ky. – Terrence Williams scored 16 points, and the Cardinals won the Billy Minardi Classic. MVP Brandon Jenkins added 13 points and four assists for Louisville (8-1), which remained unbeaten in the four-year history of the tournament it holds.

No. 12 UCLA 74, Wagner 72

Los Angeles – Luc Richard Mbah a Moute scored from underneath with 14 seconds remaining, lifting UCLA over Wagner.

No. 20 Nevada 68, Georgia 62

Reno, Nev. – Nick Fazekas had 20 points and 13 rebounds, and Mo Charlo added 17 points and five assists for Nevada.
