Bankruptcies

The number of Douglas County residents or businesses filing for bankruptcy protection since new bankruptcy rules took effect doubled during the past week.

Two such cases were filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Topeka:

¢ Anita Sue Daney, 2s716 Ridge Court, Lawrence.

¢ Laverne Deneace Neighbors, doing business as Party Palace, P.O. Box 1371, Lawrence.

That brings to four the total number of cases coming out of the county since the new bankruptcy rules took effect Oct. 17, according to court records.

The had been a rush of filings leading up to the change. On Sunday, Oct. 16 – the day before the deadline – there were 551 cases filed statewide, according to the court’s Web site. Of those cases, 41 involved filings from Douglas County.
