Power of patience

Congratulations to all the Lawrence drivers who summoned the patience Wednesday to slow down and get home safely.

Patience is a virtue, they say, and when the snow was falling and streets were slick in Lawrence on Wednesday, patience was, in many cases, also the key to getting safely to your destination.

Although many accidents were reported in Lawrence during the storm, there were a great many drivers who apparently recognized the wisdom of showing some patience. At least on some local thoroughfares, traffic was moving at a crawl during evening drive time, but it was moving. It took a little longer to get home, but for most drivers, that was a small price to pay for arriving safely and without a dented fender.

Many local drivers also were being unusually cooperative and courteous. Perhaps recognizing that they all were in the same boat, drivers went out of their way to stop and let others change lanes or turn in front of them.

So let’s hear it for all those Lawrence drivers who showed some patience and went out of their way Wednesday to help themselves and others get home safely. Maybe it would be a good thing for drivers to show a little more patience even when the snow isn’t falling.
