Lawrence Police are warning about a telephone scam circulating through Douglas County.

In recent days, seven people have reported getting suspicious calls from someone claiming to be from the government. According to police, the person asks for personal information and a checking-account number in order to send a tax refund. Police have notified local banks of the scam, but no one yet has reported losing money from it.

Police say that unless you’ve initiated the contact, it’s not wise to give your personal information to someone over the phone or Internet.
