South Haven ? A middle school football, basketball and track coach in this small south-central Kansas town has resigned after police said they found methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and some cash during a search of his Wellington home.

Wellington Police Chief Mike Keller said the search warrant was served Tuesday at the home of Paul Ledesma, 45, after an investigation led authorities to believe he was in possession of meth and had plans to sell it.

After the search, Ledesma was arrested on suspicion of possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia and drug tax stamp violations. He has not been formally charged.

Ledesma, who was a coach for the South Haven school district, resigned Wednesday after he was released from jail. He was not a teacher.

A number listed for a Paul Ledesma in Wellington had been disconnected.

Supt. John Showman said there were no concerns among school officials that something was amiss before they learned about Ledesma’s arrest. The first-year superintendent was in the room when K-12 Principal Kim White spoke to Ledesma on the phone. After the conversation, Showman said the principal told him Ledesma said he was remorseful for the embarrassment that his arrest had caused the school.

The school district is located in a farming community and has about 240 students who attend classes on a single campus.

“It’s a tough deal,” Showman said. “Obviously, this is a person we had worked with and had good relationships with. You feel for him and his family.”
