KU recital to feature Fulbright Scholars

“East Meets West!”, a piano and voice recital featuring two Fulbright Scholars at Kansas University, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 17 in Swarthout Recital Hall in Murphy Hall.

Performing are pianist Egle Perkumaite, associate professor of piano at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, in Vilnius, Lithuania, and a Fulbright professor at KU in the fall 2005, and tenor John Staniunas, KU associate professor of theater and film and Fulbright professor in Lithuania in 2004-05. Staniunas will be joined by soprano Leslie Bennett, KU assistant professor of theater and film and a former vocal soloist in Boston.

Perkumaite will perform the first half of the recital, playing classical works by Lithuanian composer M.K. Chiurlionis, as well as works by Robert Schumann, Sergei Rachmaninov and Frederic Chopin. Staniunas and Bennett, accompanied by Perkumaite, will perform the second half, singing works from the American musical theater, including songs by George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and others.

The recital is free and open to the public.
