Christina Applegate, husband file for divorce

Los Angeles – Christina Applegate and her husband, Johnathon Schaech, are calling it quits after four years of marriage.

The couple have filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court. Their publicists, Ame Van Iden and Chuck James, confirmed the split Monday.

“The decision is mutual,” they said in a joint statement without further comment.

Applegate, 34, played ditsy daughter Kelly Bundy on TV’s “Married … With Children” and earned a Tony nomination for her role in “Sweet Charity” on Broadway.

Schaech, 36, starred in 1996’s “That Thing You Do!”

Former ‘American Idol’ contestant arrested

Brookfield, Conn.- Former “American Idol” contestant Julia DeMato was arrested and charged with alleged drug possession and drunken driving in her hometown over the weekend.

Police said the 26-year-old singer was arrested early Saturday morning after they saw a dark sport utility vehicle drive into the parking lot of a restaurant that had been closed for more than an hour.

DeMato, who made the top 10 in season two of “American Idol,” failed field sobriety tests, police said. They said a search of her SUV found two marijuana pipes, a small quantity of marijuana and a baggie with a small amount of white powder that tested positive for cocaine.

Aniston suing photographer

Los Angeles – Jennifer Aniston is suing a paparazzo, claiming he invaded her privacy by using a telephoto lens to photograph her inside her home when she was topless or partly undressed.

The lawsuit filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court alleges that photographer Peter Brandt must have observed Aniston “from a great distance through invasive, intrusive and unlawful measures.”

The photos “could have been taken only by means of trespass” and were shot in a place where she had reasonable expectations of privacy, the 36-year-old actress, who starred on NBC’s “Friends,” claims.

Aniston is seeking monetary damages and a court order to stop Brandt and anyone else from making money from the photos.

Brandt couldn’t be reached for comment by the Los Angeles Times. His celebrity photos have appeared in People magazine and the New York Post.

Aniston’s latest lawsuit comes as the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office is investigating whether increasingly aggressive celebrity photographers are initiating confrontations to capture lucrative photos.

Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson and Lindsay Lohan have had alleged run-ins with paparazzi in recent months.

Shanghai surprise

Shanghai, China – Jet Li says the upcoming movie “Fearless,” the story of Chinese martial arts pioneer Huo Yuanjia, will be his last martial arts film.

The 42-year-old actor told students at Fudan University that he wanted to make more philosophical, family-oriented movies, the Youth Daily newspaper reported Monday.

He said future projects could include another collaboration with French filmmaker Luc Besson, who wrote Li’s 2001 hit, “Kiss of the Dragon.”

However, Li added, he has been in talks with more than 20 Hollywood productions and will “shoot whichever one comes to fruition first.”

Sacked on ‘Survivor’

Grand Haven Township, Mich. – “Survivor: Guatemala” contestant and retired pro football quarterback Gary Hogeboom says he had some good luck and some bad during his 30 days in the jungle of Central America.

And if he had it to do over, he says he wouldn’t change a thing.

Hogeboom, 47, started 79 NFL games with Dallas, Indianapolis and Phoenix between 1980 and 1989.

The Central Michigan University graduate and real estate developer was the 12th person voted out of the game during episode 11, which CBS broadcast Thanksgiving Day.

He said a misunderstanding with contestant Jamie Newton during the ninth episode caused his ouster.

“I went up to Jamie and said I was voting with those guys, but he misunderstood me, and he went back to the rest of the tribe and said I was voting against them,” he told the Grand Haven Tribune.

School good, school bad

Santa Monica, Calif. – Kanye West’s first album is titled “The College Dropout” and his lyrics often extol the benefits of a real-world education.

But Monday found the 27-year-old rapper at Santa Monica High School, performing a rousing, six-song set and answering questions after students won a local radio contest.

“Me? I use real life, I learn from real people,” West said as he sat in a classroom, waiting to go onstage. “The great thing about school, and the bad thing about it, is that you can just sit there in the back of the room and not pay any attention. In real life, being shy is not going to get you anywhere. I get educated every day.”

West’s visit began with a contest that radio station KPWR-FM announced in November. The rules were simple: West would perform for the Southern California student body that cast the most votes for its school on the contest Web site.

Santa Monica High students submitted nearly 1 million votes out of the 5 million cast.

An iron will

London – Carol Thatcher, daughter of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, overcame initial betting odds of 33-1 against her to win the TV reality show “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me out of Here!”

The 52-year-old broadcast journalist said she was “amazed, astonished and gobsmacked” at her victory.

Thatcher was one of 10 celebrities, including former soap opera stars and pop singers, to endure a series of humiliations in the Australian rain forest.

“I’ll treasure happy memories of cooperation, kindness, good humor, banter and so on,” she said Monday night. “I shall definitely remember eating a squelching kangaroo testicle.”

The public voted contestants off the show based on their performance in endurance tests usually involving bugs and wildlife. Thatcher ate fish eyes and swam across a lake with poisonous frogs, snakes and rats on her head – twice – to win dessert for her fellow campers.

Thatcher said her mother, known as the “Iron Lady” when she was prime minister from 1979 to 1990, didn’t know she was on the show.

Pop star wins libel case

London – British pop star Robbie Williams accepted undisclosed libel damages Tuesday from publishers of a newspaper and magazines that had claimed he was a homosexual.

The defendants, British publishing groups MGN Limited, publisher of The People, a Sunday tabloid, and Northern & Shell PLC, publisher of Star and Hot Stars magazines, agreed to publish prominent apologies to the 31-year-old singer and to pay damages and legal costs.

Zoe Norden, a lawyer representing MGN and Northern & Shell, said: “I accept that the allegations … were untrue. The defendant apologizes to the claimant and expresses its regret for the injury and distress caused.”
