University Band to play at Lied Center

Kansas University’s Department of Music & Dance will present a Dec. 7 performance by the University Band titled “America – a Journey Home.”

It will highlight works of American composers. Amy Knopps, a graduate student studying wind conducting under Professor John Lynch, will conduct the concert, which will highlight works of American composers.

The program will begin with a hymn-like setting of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and will move into a performance of “Old Home Days Suite for Band” by Charles Ives and Jonathan Elkus. The ensemble will then perform Aaron Copland’s “Variations on a Shaker Melody,” a rendition of Bennett’s “Suite of Old American Dances” and highlights from Jerry Bock and John Tatgenhorst’s “Fiddler on the Roof.” The show will conclude with performances of John Philip Sousa and Frederick Fennell’s “The Black Horse Troop March” and Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride.”

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Lied Center. Tickets are $7 for the public and $5 for students and seniors. To order tickets, call 864-2787.
