A 28-year-old Johnson County resident is the third person in Kansas this year to contract West Nile Virus, state officials announced Tuesday.

The person developed symptoms in July, was not hospitalized and survived.

So far during 2005, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment had named probable West Nile human cases in Douglas and Rice counties, one confirmed mosquito pool for the virus in Trego County and a horse in Anderson County.

Also this week, KDHE named additional positive mosquito pools in Barton, Mitchell and Wallace counties.

With August and September labeled peak months for West Nile infection, Dr. Gail Hansen, a KDHE epidemiologist, urged the use of mosquito repellent with DEET.
