Resident with rare brain disorder dies

Gale Armbrister, a Douglas County man with a rare brain disorder, died early Thursday. He was 60.

“Our family is thankful that he passed quickly and that he felt no pain,” said Armbrister’s son, Matt. “And we’d like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. We appreciate them all.”

About two weeks ago, Gale Armbrister learned he had sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a disorder that strikes about one person in a million. He was moved to a Kansas City area nursing home last week.

Gale Armbrister retired from Hallmark Cards in February 1999. He had been involved in American Legion baseball and other youth activities in Lawrence and Baldwin. He had been substitute teaching in Baldwin. He was featured in a recent Journal-World article about his disease.
