Highlights: Dr. Karen L. Miller also is senior vice chancellor for academic and student affairs at the Medical Center. Prior to her dean’s appointment, Dr. Miller was vice president of nursing and clinical services at The Children’s Hospital in Denver and associate professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Dr. Miller has more than 30 years of health care executive experience.

Highlights: Gaunt was a practicing architect for 32 years before coming to KU as dean of the School of Architecture. He is a former chief executive officer of Ellerbe Becket Inc., Minneapolis, Minn. Gaunt is leading the School of Architecture into a multiyear facilities improvement project with renovations in Snow Hall and the former Broadcasting Hall, and raising funds for an addition to the school’s home, Marvin Hall.

Highlights: Fuerst came to KU from Texas A&M, where he had been since 1979. Fuerst heads a business school that is expanding its programs with four new majors. The school also is working to emphasize international education and experiential learning by offering internships and other opportunities for both graduate and undergraduate students.

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Barbara Romzek, associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has taken over as interim dean of the school while Kansas University seeks a replacement for Kim Wilcox.

Highlights: Romzek, an associate dean of the College since 2000, will take over the university’s largest academic unit this year on an interim basis. She replaces Kim Wilcox, who left to become provost at Michigan State University. Romzek has been on the KU faculty since 1979 and is a former chairwoman of the public administration department from 1988 to 1993. She also recently chaired the university’s 10-year re-accreditation review process. The university will have a national search for the position this year.

Highlights: Smith, a Kansas City, Kan., native, also is vice provost for university outreach. Under her direction, Continuing Education recently started the KU Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, which offers programming geared toward older adults. Continuing Education program includes services at the Medical Center, Law Enforcement Training Center in Hutchinson and fire service training in Lawrence.

Highlights: Ginsberg started this summer and replaces Fred Rodriguez, who was appointed as interim dean when Angela Lumpkin resigned in October. Ginsberg had been director of the School of Education at Colorado State University since 1995. His research interests include school reform, learning disabilities, minorities in higher education, administrator training and school law.

Highlights: Since arriving at KU, Bell has overseen the opening of Eaton Hall, as well as the announcement of two major National Science Foundation grants, which established the Center for Environmentally Beneficial Catalysis and the Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets. In addition, 19 new faculty positions have been created in the School to address growing fields in engineering.

Highlights: Hedden, a native of Colby, previously served as dean of the College of Fine Arts at Wichita State University for one year. Before that, he had been at the University of Arizona since 1987, serving as College of Fine Arts vice dean since 2000. Hedden earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from KU.

Brill

Highlights: Brill was named dean of journalism in November after being appointed as interim dean to replace James Gentry, who is returning to full-time teaching and research at KU. Brill has taught at KU since 2000 and taught for eight years at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She also worked for newspapers in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Montana.

Highlights: Davis officially takes over at the School of Law on Monday when Steve McAllister steps down to resume full-time teaching. Davis has been at KU since 1971, serving as general counsel from 1974-1980 and as dean of the law school from 1980-1989. He recently served as chairman of the American Bar Assn. accreditation and standards committees, and is chairman of the Douglas County Community Foundation. The university will conduct a national search for the position this year.

Highlights: Ken Audus started his career at KU in 1984 as a postdoctoral fellow and was hired on the faculty two years later. Before being named dean, the South Dakota native was chairman of the department of pharmaceutical chemistry for six years. His research focuses on the way drugs pass through the placenta and blood-brain barrier.

Highlights: Weick is entering her final year as dean, having announced earlier this year she’ll retire next summer. She is KU’s longest-tenured dean. She came to KU in 1976 as an assistant professor, and her accolades include being inducted into the KU Women’s Hall of Fame and receiving the Outstanding Social Work Faculty Award.

Highlights: In addition to her role as executive dean of the School of Medicine, Atkinson this year was named executive vice chancellor for the Medical Center. She previous served as professor and chairwoman of the department of pathology and laboratory medicine at Kansas University Medical Center. Atkinson has edited several books on cytopatholgy, the diagnosis of disease based on cellular analysis. She came to KU in January 2000 from the MCP Hahnemann School of Medicine in Philadelphia.

Highlights: Clark is overseeing a $70 million, long-term expansion project on the Overland Park campus. That included the opening of the $17.8 million Regnier Hall a year ago and the opening of a student union this month. Plans call for the campus’ 25 programs to increase to 40 in the next 10 years, and for enrollment to double.

Highlights: DeSalvo was named interim dean of students and interim associate vice provost for student life in April, after the university fired Richard Johnson for unspecified reasons. DeSalvo has been director of Counseling and Psychological Services at KU since 1991. The university will launch a search for a permanent dean of students this academic year.

Bentley oversees KU’s extensive library system, which serves nearly 26,000 students and includes 4 million books and 36,000 current serial titles housed in seven library facilities on the Lawrence and Overland Park campuses. Bentley is working to upgrade library facilities by adding user space. A library annex, to hold 1.5 million lesser-used volumes, is set to open in April.
