One would like to think that the various city administrators read the Journal-World to keep abreast of the concerns of their constituents and then try to remedy them. A recent Journal-World editorial on the noise pollution of the thundering boom boxes in cars and pickups on our streets confronted one of those issues, and I was hopeful that the publicity might rouse the proper authorities into action.

Living as I do at the intersection of Kasold and Peterson, three corners of which are residential, I am treated to this thumping cacophony day and night and overnight; earplugs and noise-canceling headphones bring only modest relief. Letters to the police department have had no effect and, since the editorial, the noise seems even more persistent – and, if possible, louder. Lawrence likes to present itself as a model community, a wonderful place to live, but there are some serious cracks in its fabric which belie that idyllic reputation.
