University Bridge Club announces the winners of its April 23 game. Hosts were Al and Carol Smith, Lois Liebert and Bebe Huxtable.

Blue winners were Florence McNicoll, first; Jean Khatib, second; Henry Wigington, third; Roy Cropp, fourth; and Hank Miller, fifth.

Pink winners were Alice Akin, first; Bebe Huxtable, second; Wanda Kring, third; and Jane Golden, fourth. Marian Davis tied for fifth place with Gini Wigington.

New officers for University Women’s Club were elected for the 2005-06 academic year at the club’s Spring Scholarship Luncheon.

They include Janis Hutchison, president; Gwen Dobson, president-elect; Jerrye Van Leer, recording secretary; Kathe Dougherty, corresponding secretary; Sandi Miller, treasurer-elect; and Susan Lacy, Jane Rogers and Carol Smith, members-at-large.

Chairwomen of the standing committee include Nancy Hale-Martinko, interest groups; Anne Poggio, Malott room; Marilyn McCleary, membership and nominations; Judy Niebaum, new members and friends, and Jeannot Seymour, publications design.

Committee chairwomen-elects include Suzanne McColl, Carolyn Schroeder, Faith Greenwood, Ann Blackhurst, Glenda Stevens, Nancy Yacher, Rita Spradlin, Suzanne Collins, Betsy Weaver, Grace Marion, Mary Ross, Mary Beth Petr, Sandi Miller, and Janis Hutchison.

Alita Cooper was chairwoman of the nominating committee. Members of the committee included Mary Loveland, Rita Spradlin, Tammy Steeples and Phyllis Tiffany.

To celebrate May as Older Americans Month, Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging Inc. will play host to the Vintage Ball. The event will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Topeka. Music will be provided by the Fairlawn Road Swing Band.

Pamela Johnson-Betts, secretary, will be give opening remarks. Seniors, their friends, family and caregivers are encouraged to attend. Tickets are $2 each or $3 per couple and can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling Lacee Schlarman at (785) 235-1367.

Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging Inc. advocates on aging issues, builds community partnerships and implements programs within Shawnee, Jefferson and Douglas counties to help seniors live independent and dignified lives.

The University Women’s Club recently gave $1,250 scholarships to six Kansas University students for the 2005-2006 academic year. Janis Hutchison, club president, announced the winners at the spring luncheon, where the recipients were honored guests.

Those who received scholarships were: Rebecca Barrett-Fox, doctoral student in American studies; Jessica Cook, Topeka senior majoring in African studies and sociology; Yana Delkhah, Lawrence senior majoring in pre-medicine and human biology; Becca Evanhoe, senior majoring in chemistry and journalism; Karrie Shogren, doctoral student in the Department of Special Education; and Sarah Smiley, doctoral student in the Department of Geology.

Gwen Dobson was chairwoman of the scholarship committee, which received 165 applications. She was assisted by Jennifer Alderdice, Caroljean Brune, Suzanne Collins and Barbara Schowen. Winners were chosen on the basis of need, academic achievements and service.

In North South competition, Chris Lane and Mona Bell tied for first place with Sally Taylor and Betty Collier. Patt Radford and Lois Clark placed third, while Florine Creek and Frances Vogel placed first in B.

The East West winners were Virginia Johnston and Marge Hitchcock, followed by Judy Bevan and John Gilbert. Helen Huffman and John Gilbert placed third.

The North South winners were Patt Radford and Betty Collier followed by Chris Lane and Julia Brooks. Polly Schoning and Judy Hildreth placed third, followed by Erna Holmes and Frances Vogel. Virginia Eddy and Shirlie Vaughn placed first in B, followed by Sam Pierron and Grant Sutton.

The East West winners were Lois Clark and Harry Shaffer, followed by Klee Zaricky and Sally Taylor. Eldon Herd and Glenna Herd placed third in A and first in B, followed by Florine Creek and Jean Otney. Linda Swain and Linda Randall placed third in B.
