Firebirds falter in OT

? Free State High’s season of one-goal girls soccer setbacks continued Tuesday with a 4-3 overtime defeat against Shawnee Mission South at Shawnee Mission Complex.

“It’s tough,” FSHS coach Jason Pendleton said of his first game back after missing a pair because of the birth of his son, Nicholas, on Thursday. “It’s the fourth overtime loss of year, and, of our eight losses, six of them are by one goal. We are certainly competitive, but we have to find a way to mentally do things at the right time to get over the hump.”

The Firebirds were up 2-0 at halftime after goals from Claire Wilkinson and freshman Alexa Moreno.

After falling behind 3-2, Free State pulled even with about seven minutes remaining on a goal by Jenni Brooks off an assist by Moreno, but then the Firebirds bowed in OT.

Pendleton said Banaka Okwuone played “tremendous defense,” Clare Robinson played “perhaps her best game of the year,” and cited Nicki Riggins for her performance.

The Firebirds (1-8-1) next will take on the second-ranked team in the state and No. 7 team in the region, Shawnee Mission West, at 4 p.m. Thursday at FSHS.
