Lawrence High junior places in writing contest

Lawrence High School junior Arna Bontemps Hemenway received two first-place awards and three honorable mentions in the youth division of the 2005 Kansas Voices Contest.

Hemenway’s short story, “The Muck,” and poem “Kick Cheer Dance Redemption,” placed first.

His “Uncles” and “Of the Heart” short stories received honorable mentions. Hemenway’s “An American Jewish Soldier’s Cemetery” poem also received honorable mention.

Kevin Rabas, of Lawrence, received an honorable mention in the adult poetry division for “The Moon.”

Clay workshop to include drawing, painting

Bracker’s Good Earth Clays Inc. will offer “Drawing And Painting On Clay with David Gamble,” a two-day workshop, Saturday and Sunday at Bracker’s, 1831 E. 1450 Road.

This is the second time Bracker’s has been host to a workshop by David Gamble.

Free State students to present festival

Free State High School’s annual Blackbox Theater Festival is today through Saturday at the high school, 4700 Overland Drive.

The festival showcases acts written and directed by eight Free State students. The event starts at 7:30 p.m.

There will be a dinner theater Thursday night. Tickets are $7 for the dinner and the show, with the dinner starting at 6:30 p.m. and the show at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for the show all three nights are $3 for students and $4 for adults.

Tickets may be purchased at the door.
