Kevin Tilly has joined the company as vice president of operations and marketing, and also serves on the company’s board of directors. The Kansas University graduate previously served as regional vice president for ING Financial Services, and is EPA certified.

Sara Jane Zimmerman is the company’s vice president of sales. She also serves on the company’s board. Zimmerman, also a KU graduate, previously was a store manager for Radio Shack Corp. in Lawrence, Topeka and in the Kansas City area. She is EPA certified.

Cary Engle, Susan Engle and Carol Schneider, of Englewood Florist, Lawrence, recently received continuing business and design education through the Kansas State Florists’ Assn.

The employees traveled to Russell to participate in “Designing for Spring,” a hands-on workshop and design show featuring prom corsages and boutonnieres, and fresh spring floral designs.

Helen Roads has opened a counseling practice, Spiritsong, at Harmony Wellness Center, 841 N.H.

Roads, with 15 years’ experience, specializes in post-traumatic stress disorder and other stress-related issues, life coaching and the spiritual aspects of personal growth.

Roads is a certified trauma specialist and licensed clinical professional counselor. She is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, an intervention that uses bilateral stimulation of the brain to decrease the effects of trauma.

She received a master’s degree from Oklahoma State University and is a doctoral candidate in the School of Consciousness and Transformation at California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. She co-developed a treatment involving the combination of psychotherapy and acupuncture for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Allstate Insurance Co. has opened a new agency at 4101 W. Sixth St. The office is operated by Eric Schmidt, an Allstate agent. Schmidt is a Kansas University graduate and longtime Lawrence resident.

Molly Wood and Matthew Hoy, partners at Stevens & Brand LLP, presented a seminar, “Legal Assistance for Frail, Elderly Kansans,” Friday at a Kansas Bar Assn. seminar in Overland Park. Wood provided an update on Medicaid law, and Hoy discussed the new general durable power of attorney statue.

Shannon Oury, an attorney at Stevens & Brand, contributed an article, “The Right to Intimate Association in the Public Workplace,” for the March 2005 issue of The Journal of Kansas Trial Lawyers Assn. Oury joined the company in 2004 and concentrates her practice on employment, commercial litigation, construction and product liability.

Farm Service Agency loans are available for Douglas County farmers who suffered crop or livestock losses due to storms, rains and flooding that occurred between Jan. 4 and Jan. 6. Other area counties that are eligible include Franklin, Osage, Shawnee and Johnson.

To be eligible for a loan, applicants must be operating a family-size farm or ranch, must be unable to get credit elsewhere and must have suffered a qualifying physical and/or production loss from the disaster. The deadline for applications is Oct. 11.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development recently opened a new office in Oskaloosa. The office, located in the Jefferson County USDA Service Center, delivers expanded community and economic development programming throughout northeast Kansas.

After an open house, the agency played host to a workshop on rural housing financing for local lenders and Realtors. The meeting provided information on the agency’s Guaranteed Rural Housing Loan Program.

Producers who are located in the Delaware watershed in Jefferson and Shawnee counties can apply for a Conservation Security Program contract. The program financially rewards farmers and ranchers who have been protecting their soil, water, grassland and wildlife resources.

TherapyWorks, Lawrence, played host to a free seminar, “Put Your Best Foot Forward,” April 4 the company’s Wellness Center, Lawrence. The seminar — presented by Peter Townley, certified personal trainer — offered information on proper measuring and fit of shoes, selection of supportive shoe gear, conservative care and prevention of injuries.

Dr. Douglas Woolley, an associate professor of family and community medicine at the Kansas University School of Medicine-Wichita, formally was invested with the Delos V. Smith Jr. Fellowship in Community Geriatrics during a ceremony Friday in Wichita.

Participants included Dr. Joseph C. Meek, professor of medicine and former dean of the medical school; Dr. Rick Kellerman, professor and chairman of the Department of Family and Community Medicine; Lynn Loveland, director of development in Wichita for the Kansas University Endowment Association; and Dr. Jack Wortman, a board member of the Delos V. Smith Senior Citizens Foundation.

The presentation came during the annual Family Medicine Spring Symposium, sponsored by the school’s Department of Family and Community Medicine.

Honors and awards

Thomas Pollard, Lawrence, has been honored by Farmers Insurance Group for his sales achievements during 2004. He has been invited to attend the 2005 annual meeting of the company’s top sales producers in Boston, known as the Topper Club. The meeting gives district managers and agents an opportunity to discuss local and national trends and activities affecting the insurance business in their communities.

Caren Lowe, director of special education for East Central Kansas Cooperative in Education, was honored with this year’s State Administrator’s Award by the Kansas Association of Special Education Administrators. Lowe has lived in Lawrence for 40 years and has served as director of the cooperative for the past 20 years. She received a bachelor’s degree in education and a specialist degree in educational psychology at Kansas University.
