Wichita ? Senior first baseman Andy Scholl’s home run accounted for Kansas University’s only run in a 5-1 baseball loss to Wichita State on Wednesday at Eck Stadium.

WSU first baseman Derek Schermerhorn, who was 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, gave his team the lead and extended his career-long hitting streak to 32 games with a single up the middle in the first inning.

His performance moved him into a tie for the second-longest streak in WSU history.

Scholl sliced a 2-0 deficit in half with his third home run of the season in the top of the second.

The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the sixth, when the Shockers pushed their lead to 3-1 on a RBI double by right fielder Matt Brown, who later added a two-run homer. Brown was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.

The Jayhawks loaded the bases in the top of the eighth inning against WSU reliever Nate Booth, but were unable to cash in as senior catcher Sean Richardson fouled out.

Sophomore Sean Land started for KU, allowing only two runs on five hits with two strikeouts in three innings.

The Jayhawks (24-15) and Shockers (29-10) each have won a game in their season series with two more games scheduled — April 20 at Hoglund Ballpark and May 4 at Eck Stadium.

Kansas returns to Big 12 Conference competition this weekend, playing host to No. 12 Baylor at Hoglund Ballpark.
