Ken Snow has joined Lawrence-based Landplan Engineering as an engineering technician, responsible for design and drafting of civil engineering projects. He has eight years of experience. Snow’s current projects include Habitat for Humanity in Lawrence and Sunset Ridge in Wellsville.

Bud Jennings Carpet One recognizes Harold Hickock for his 40 years of service. Hickock began his career as an apprentice installer with Bud Jennings on April 10, 1965. He is a Bigelow certified master installer, the highest recognition given by Carpet One.

Don Burman, Rick Mullen and Rich Lorenzo, financial consultants with Berthel Fisher & Co. Financial Services, earned membership in the company’s President’s Club for 2004. To earn the honor, they were top producers and met financial planning and client service requirements. Their practice focuses on retirement planning and oil/natural gas investing. Steve Malin has become a shareholder in Treanor Architects and joins Nadia Zhiri, Dan Rowe and Michael Treanor as principals of the firm.

Malin, a Kansas University graduate, joined Treanor Architects in 1991 and leads its greek life market, serving as principal-in-charge of fraternity and sorority projects throughout the United States. He has provided architectural and project development consultation services on more than 50 greek and other residence life projects.

Malin has presented seminars regarding design trends in greek housing. Treanor Architects has offices in Lawrence, Topeka, Kansas City, Mo., and St. Louis.

Jessica Stoll has been appointed by Capitol Federal Savings as assistant loan manager for the company’s Lawrence market area. She joined the bank in 1998 as loan processor. She originates and closes loans for customers, develops and enhances relationships with local leaders and promotes the bank’s affordable housing programs and housing grant programs.

Honors and awards

Friends of Kansas Libraries recognized the contributions of Hans Fischer, Lawrence, to the Kansas library community at the state library conference March 30 at Overland Park Convention Center. Fischer received the Duane Johnson Library Leadership Award. After serving seven years on the Friends of Kansas Libraries executive board, Fischer is president of the newly-formed Kansas Library Trustee Assn. Fischer has worked as a consulting architect for library construction projects.

Astaris was recognized by Lawrence Education Achievement Partners as the March recipient of the LEAP Shining Star Award. Activities with Astaris’ partner school, Woodlawn School, include reading to students every week; providing snacks for students during state assessments; tutoring individual students on a weekly basis; helping classroom teachers with projects and lessons; and providing financial support for a schoolwide program that promotes reading and math practice at home. Students also make birthday cards for Astaris employees.

Kim Jennings, of Woodlawn, and Bob Brille and Karen Schuyler, of Astaris, are the primary coordinators for the partnership.

Coming events

Kwang-Sun Kim, a founding member of the Korea University of Technology and Education, will be the keynote speaker at the Kansas International Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Friday at Alvamar Country Club, 1809 Crossgate Drive.

Kim received his doctoral degree in mechanical engineering from Kansas University in 1986.

Kim is chairman of the Mechatronics Engineering School at Korea University of Technology and Education, where he also is dean of the graduate school.

Kim, in 2003 while vice president of KU Alumni Association in Korea, spearheaded fund-raisers for the Korean War Memorial Monument at KU. Due to his efforts and contributions from KU graduates in Korea, the dedication ceremony will be at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Drive on the KU campus.

KJ Consulting and Kim have been working on developing an economic relationship between Korea and Kansas. In November, Kim led economic delegates of the Chungnam Province to Kansas, where they met with Department of Commerce and Housing officials.

The breakfast will be a panel discussion. Serving on the panel will be Kim; Ho-Won Kim, regional chairman and national vice chairman of the advisory council for the Peaceful Unification of Korea to the President; and Ki-June Park, of KJ Consulting.
