City planning new water treatment facility

Lawrence City Commission agenda highlights ¢ 6:30 p.m. Tuesday ¢ City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets ¢ Sunflower Broadband Channel 25 ¢ Meeting documents online at www.lawrenceks.org

Bottom line

City commissioners are scheduled to advance plans for a new wastewater treatment plant on the Wakarusa River by issuing a request for proposals to engineering firms interested in designing the facility.

Background

The project is expected to be one of the larger projects in the city’s history, with a price tag upward of $80 million. The project is needed, in part, because there have been estimates that the city’s sewer system will run out of capacity by 2011 if new treatment facilities aren’t added. City officials expect the plant to be completed by 2010.
