Kansas City, Mo. ? A former police sergeant who worked on cases involving crimes against children was indicted Thursday on five federal counts of child pornography.

Rick Enss, 41, of Norborne, spent 10 years with the Richmond police before being charged last year in a 14-count state indictment that accused him of child molestation, rape and incest.

The indictment unsealed Thursday claims Enss forced a minor in his own home to view pornography, including images of children performing sexual acts.

Authorities would not clarify Enss’ relationship to his victims, only saying that they had lived with him.

“It’s especially tragic when the alleged perpetrator is a trusted and respected member of our community,” said U.S. Atty. Todd Graves, who announced the indictment.

The indictment contains little information on Enss’ alleged actions, but a motion to keep him jailed until trial offers more details. It claims the defendant coerced a victim to read stories of incestuous relationships between parents and children; that he had more than 3,000 pornographic images of children; and that he had a manual entitled “Pedophile’s Handbook.”

The motion says that after Enss was charged last year, he continued to contact two victims by e-mail, using an alias.

He is charged with single counts of enticement of a child to engage in prohibited sexual conduct, providing child pornography to a minor and receiving child pornography, and two counts of possessing child pornography.

J.R. Hobbs, Enss’ attorney, said: “He’s entered his not guilty plea. I don’t think any further comment would be appropriate.”

Graves also announced that Jan Pleasant Helder, a 42-year-old attorney from Mission Hills, Kan., was charged with using the Internet in an attempt to lure a minor for sexual activity.

“Together, these indictments should serve as a reminder to all of us,” Graves said, “that child predators may come from all walks of life and may cross socio-economic lines.”
