Alvin D. James Sr.

Graveside services for Alvin D. James Sr., 72, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oak Hill Cemetery. American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14 will conduct military services.

Mr. James died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, at his home.

He was born Sept. 12, 1932, in Lawrence, the son of John W. James and Barbara Houseworth. He grew up in Lawrence and then lived in Fontana, Calif., from 1959 to 1979. At that time, he moved back to Lawrence.

Mr. James served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a welder for Hamm’s Quarries Inc. from 1980 to 1998. He worked at Tek Fab from 1999 to 2001, when he retired.

He was a member of the National Rifle Assn. and Alford-Clarke Post 852 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He married Gloria Buster on July 28, 1956, in Leavenworth. She died Jan. 2, 1999.

Two sons, Brian and Michael, also died earlier.

Survivors include a companion, Bonnie Banes, of the home; a daughter, Mellissa Sumonja, Lawrence; two sons, Alvin D. Jr. and Darryl W., both of Lawrence; eight grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

The family suggests memorials to Southern Care Hospice, sent in care of the mortuary.
