It could be the end of the line for the pizza delivery-heist gang.

For the second time in less than a week, a Pizza Shuttle delivery driver was attacked and robbed early Monday, but this time around Lawrence Police arrested several suspects a few hours later.

Three men and two juveniles are in custody while formal charges are pending in connection with both incidents, said police spokesman Sgt. Dan Ward.

He gave the following account:

Shortly before 1 a.m. Monday, a driver for Pizza Shuttle, 1601 W. 23rd St., took a delivery to an address in the 3800 block of Shadybrook Lane. The address turned out to be for a vacant house.

The driver returned to his car and attempted to use his cell phone to call a number that was thought to have been used by the customer ordering the pizza. While he was calling, a man reached into the open window, grabbed the driver by the shoulder and ordered him out of the car.

“The victim pulled away and moved to the passenger side of the vehicle and a second suspect reached in and took the cell phone,” Ward said. Then both suspects ran.

An investigation led police to think the suspects had called for pizza from a pay phone at the nearby Hy-Vee store, 3504 Clinton Parkway. Employees there gave officers a description of the suspects.

When the suspects returned to the store about 4:40 a.m., store employees called police. The suspects left the store in a white vehicle. Officers stopped the car in the 2300 block of Kasold Drive and arrested the suspects.

The suspects are thought to have been involved in the theft of two vehicles, one of which was recovered in the Clinton Lake area.

Early Thursday, a group of young men beat and kicked a Pizza Shuttle driver outside a vacant house in the 3700 block of Overland Drive. They took about $65 of the driver’s tips and pizzas valued at $13.

The suspects are all from Lawrence, Ward said.
