Crime

Dispute leads to assault of turnpike toll collector

A group of men assaulted a Kansas Turnpike toll collector Monday morning in a road-rage incident at the west Lawrence exit, police said.

Kansas Highway Patrol officials said they didn’t have a detailed report ready Monday afternoon but said it happened roughly as follows:

About 10:45 a.m., the toll collector exchanged words with the driver of a van that was stopped at the booth. The van’s driver tried to spray the toll collector by turning his windshield-washing fluid on.

When the toll collector came out of the booth, a group of at least four men, including the driver, got out and “jumped” the worker.

Capt. John Walters of the highway patrol said he didn’t know how many blows, if any, were struck during the fight, but he said the worker declined medical treatment at the scene.
