Youth sought for deer hunt

A special youth hunt near the Wolf Creek nuclear plant will take place during the state’s firearms deer season Dec. 1-12.

Wolf Creek volunteers will guide 12 hunters between the ages of 12 and 18 to prime deer habitat on power plant land.

To help reduce the potential of vehicle-deer accidents, the young hunters will attempt to harvest antlerless deer from blinds situated in safe shooting zones.

To be eligible, applicants must not have harvested a deer before and must be accompanied by an adult. Successful applicants must purchase a deer permit from Wildlife and Parks, have a hunter education certificate, a valid hunting license if age 16 or older and attend a pre-hunt safety seminar.

Youths interested have until Friday to apply by calling the Eisenhower State Park office at Melvern Lake at (785) 528-4102.

Twelve youths will be selected by a random drawing.
