Mangino’s pact full of incentives

Some key provisions of Mark Mangino’s contract with the Kansas University Athletic Corp. Mangino is the university’s head football coach. The contract is through Dec. 31, 2008.

Annual salary: $128,438 to be paid in 12 equal monthly installments. That’s about $10,703 per month. No less than $475,000 annually for taking part in radio, television and Internet-based programs.

Key performance incentives:

  • $10,000 bonus if the team wins six regular-season games.
  • An additional $20,000 if the team wins seven regular-season games.
  • An additional $30,000 if the team wins eight regular-season games.
  • An additional $40,000 if the team wins nine regular-season games.
  • An additional $50,000 if the team wins 10 regular-season games.
  • An additional $60,000 if the team wins 11 regular-season games.
  • $5,000 for defeating Kansas State University.
  • $5,000 for defeating University of Nebraska.
  • $35,000 for participating in the Big 12 Conference Championship Game.
  • $50,000 for participating in a BCS bowl game.
  • $35,000 for participating in a New Year’s Day bowl game.
  • $20,000 for participating in any other bowl game.
  • $100,000 bonus for winning a national championship
  • $10,000 for each game won and televised on ABC, CBS, NBC or ESPN; $5,000 for victories televised on FOX.
  • $5,000 if season-ticket sales exceed 30,000.
  • $10,000 if season-ticket sales exceed 35,000.
  • $15,000 if season-ticket sales exceed 40,000.
  • $1,000 for each player who graduates.
  • $25,000 if he’s named Big 12 Coach of the Year.
  • $50,000 if he’s named Associated Press National Coach of the Year.
  • $10,000 for keeping team expenses under budget.
  • Two top-of-the-line automobiles.
  • Membership at Alvamar and Lawrence country clubs.
  • Travel, lodging, food and entertainment expenses for Mangino’s spouse and as many as four guests to away football games.
  • 50 tickets to each home game; tickets will be between the 35-yard lines.
  • Use of a scholarship suite at Memorial Stadium.
  • Four lower-level season tickets to KU men’s basketball games.
  • $2 million paid life insurance policy.

Mangino is required to “wear exclusively Nike” products during athletic events and media appearances.
