Retired Russian colonel to discuss unrest

A former colonel in the Russian military will speak this week at Kansas University.

Retired Col. Andrei Demurenko will speak on “Why Beslan? Russia, Chechnya and Military Reform” at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Room 318 Bailey Hall. His appearance is organized by the Center for Russian and East European Studies and the Foreign Military Studies Office at Fort Leavenworth.

When he retired, Demurenko was serving on the general staff of the Russian Armed Forces. In 1995, he became chief of staff for the United Nation’s Sarajevo, Bosnia, sector.

Demurenko was the first Russian officer to study at the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

High school in Topeka to honor KU’s architect

Warren Corman, university architect and special assistant to the chancellor at Kansas University, will be inducted into the Washburn Rural High School Hall of Fame later this month.

Corman will be one of three inductees in the Topeka school’s Hall of Fame, which was established in 2003. The ceremony is at 2 p.m. Sunday at the school cafeteria.

Corman graduated from Washburn Rural in 1944 and was a Navy pilot from 1944 to 1946. He then graduated from KU in 1950.

He was director of facilities for the Kansas Board of Regents from 1966 to 1997, before coming to work at KU.

Rock Chalk Revue’s theme announced

Kansas University living groups hoping to participate in next year’s Rock Chalk Revue now know the show’s theme: “By the Numbers.”

The theme was announced last week by the Rock Chalk Revue Advisory Board, which is organizing the 55th annual production.

Twelve organizations will compete for spots in the show by preparing a script, set design, music, character sketches and choreography. The top five entries will perform March 10, 11 and 12 at the Lied Center.
