Nearly every member of Kansas University’s men’s golf team had a stellar summer.

Now the Jayhawks will see if that success will carry over into autumn.

After struggling at last week’s season opener in Jonesborough, Tenn., the No. 24-ranked Jayhawks will try to return to their summer form at the Kansas Invitational today and Tuesday at Alvamar Golf Club.

“Anything that could’ve happened, happened last week, but that’s over now,” KU coach Ross Randall said. “We should be able to do well here because of our knowledge of the golf course. Then again, sometimes you put more pressure on yourself because you’re playing at home, but I think we’re gonna do OK.”

As a group, the Jayhawks sizzled all summer. Senior Kevin Ward was virtually unstoppable. He won the Kansas and Missouri amateur titles and paired with KU teammate Gary Woodland to capture the Kansas Golf Assn. Fourball Championship.

Jayhawk teammate Pete Krsnich, a Wichita native, was runner-up to Ward at the Kansas Amateur. Sophomore Barrett Martens and juniors Jason Sigler and Luke Trammell made strong showings as they advanced to the late rounds of the Fourball Championships.

Then there was sophomore Tyler Docking. The Olathe native improved in every tournament he played and capped it off with surprising run to the Final 16 of the U.S. Amateur at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, N.Y.

The stellar showings vaulted Kansas back into the national spotlight.

“I try to emphasize that there’s quite a bit expected of them, and they need to play up to that,” Randall said. “If they like the respect then they need to play well enough to deserve it.”
