Police investigate report of sexual assault on ninth grader

Lawrence Police are investigating the report of a sexual assault of a junior high school student after the ninth-grader did not return home from school Monday on the bus.

However, as police continued to investigate the incident this afternoon, they said there was some doubt as to whether it was actually a sexual assault. Police are continuing their investigation.

Police said that the girl was unsupervised for less than 50 minutes, from approximately 3:10 p.m. to 4 p.m.

She was found in a grocery wandering around and her guardian was called to come get her. Her guardian took her to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where a routine sexual assault exam was performed.

Police say the alleged incident occurred somewhere in the northwest portion of the city, but would not give further details.
