Alvin Dean Samuels

Services for Alvin Dean Samuels, 67, Gravois Mills, Mo., will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.

Mr. Samuels died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at Good Shepherd Care Center in Versailles, Mo.

He was born March 4, 1937, in Madison, Kan., the son of Paul and Mary Bitler Samuels. He lived in the Eureka area and moved to Lawrence in 1956.

Mr. Samuels was a captain at the Lawrence fire department and retired after 25 years of service in May 1981. He operated a concrete finishing business in the Lawrence area. He coached the Breakfast Optimists youth baseball teams during the 1970s, and he was a member of Ozark Chapel United Methodist Church in Laurie, Mo.

He married Retha Champ in 1956. They divorced. He married Wanda Bray Clark in 1980. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Randy, Lawrence; a daughter, Pamela Janeway, Olathe; two stepsons, Alan Clark and Glen Clark, both of Lawrence; a brother, Dan, Topeka; two sisters, Serena Anderson and Sharon King, both of Lawrence; and 14 grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to the church or Missouri River Hospice, sent in care of the mortuary.
