First Baptist Church

A “Welcome Back to KU” event will be after the Sunday worship service at First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold Drive.

All Kansas University employees, Adopt-a-Family members, and new and returning college students are invited to gather in the Roger Williams Room.

The event will feature a home-cooked meal, the opportunity to win gifts and prizes, a talk by Scott Murphy, Kansas University professor, and learn more about the church’s college ministry.

First United Methodist Church

There will be a pancake feed from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday in Brady Hall at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.

United Methodist Men will serve pancakes, sausage, milk, juice and coffee. Tickets for adults cost $3.50 in advance; $4 at the door. Cost for children is $2.50 in advance; $3 at the door. The third child eats for free.

The church will provide several new studies: Beginnings, a 12-week study taught by Don Caillouet; Sisters (six-week study), led by Tracy Livingston; or Christians in a Diverse World, (four-week study), led by Neal Malicky and Robert Shelton.

The annual all-church picnic will be 6 p.m. Sunday at the church’s west campus. Beverages will be provided. Please bring a dish to share, a lawn chair and bug spray.

The Rev. Sharon Howell will lead a Faith Quest, new Bible study, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.

Heartland Community Church

The Rev. Paul Gray will begin a series titled “SALT” (Seven Areas of Life Training) Sunday at Heartland Community Church, 619 Vt.

This week’s message is “I am not God — with no apologies to Shirley MacLaine!”

Heartland is also starting new, fall small groups for college students, those who are 20 to 30 years old and other adults. A special, four-week class on parenting will start Sunday evening.

Immanuel Lutheran Church and University Student Center

The fourth annual “Oompahfest Family Fun Festival” will be from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today in South Park and 12th and Massachusetts streets.

The event, hosted by Immanuel Lutheran Church and University Student Center, 2104 Bob Billings Way, will offer free admission, children’s games, German music and dancing.

Church members will sell authentic German food and a variety of beer and other cold beverages.

Weekly Lutheran Student Fellowship Campus Supper will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the church’s Friendship Center. All college students are welcome.

“New Member Sunday” is planned for this weekend. All those who have joined the church since April 2004 will be recognized at both services.

Crossroads, a group for those of college age or young career people, will start its fall Sunday school class at 10 a.m. this weekend. A free pizza lunch will be offered to those interested in learning more about this group, following the 11 a.m. Sunday service at Lawrence Wesleyan Church, 3705 Clinton Parkway.

A class for those interested in church membership will be at 6 p.m. The class is required for membership, but others may attend to simply learn more about Lawrence Wesleyan.

Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship

Plymouth Congregational Church

Former pastor Paul Davis will attend a potluck lunch at 1 p.m. today at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt. He will serve as guest preacher at both Sunday services.

Trinity Lutheran Church

Rally Day begins at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, kicking off the fall term of children’s Sunday school at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H. The event will be an introduction to a year of elementary-age children exploring parts of the Apostles’ Creed.

Adults will gather Sunday in the chapel to provide input on discussion groups and topics to be offered throughout the year. New session of studying the Rev. Rick Warren’s book “The Purpose Driven Life” begins at 9:45 a.m. Sept. 19.

Men’s Night Out will be Monday at the home of Stan Sneegas. There will be a backyard barbecue and a highlight video, presented by the Rev. Gary Teske, from the Companion Synod visit to Papua New Guinea last year.

University Community of Christ

Elder Steve Zahniser will preach on the topic “Accept Mercy” with special music provided by Miriam Cain at the 10 a.m. Sunday worship service at University Community of Christ, 1900 University Drive.
