Huskers’ quarterback hopes for better deliveries this time

? Nebraska quarterback Joe Dailey is known as the “mailman” to the Cornhuskers and their coaching staff.

Coach Bill Callahan says he’s satisfied with the service Dailey is providing even though the sophomore delivered to the wrong address four times in the opener against Western Illinois.

Those interceptions marred an otherwise solid outing that saw Dailey produce 246 yards of total offense and have a hand in six touchdowns in a 56-17 rout.

Dailey said he plans to be sharper today against Southern Mississippi. Specifically, he said, he needs to do a better job utilizing his second and third options, such as throwing to his running backs or his short receivers rather than forcing the ball into coverage downfield.

“We tell Joe, ‘You have to deliver the mail to all these different houses.’ Joe wants to go to the mansion all the time, but we like for Joe to go down to the low-rent district and check it down to the back,” Callahan said.

Dailey said he agreed with Callahan’s assessment that the Huskers left a lot of scoring opportunities on the field because of turnovers.

“We could have put 60 more points on the board,” Dailey said.

But Dailey said he isn’t stewing over his interceptions.

“Bad balls, tipped balls — I’m not glad they happened, but they did,” he said. “They’re out of the way. You learn from every mistake you make.”

Offensive lineman Brandon Koch said Dailey showed excellent poise in the huddle for a first-time starter, even after bad breaks.

“He puts it behind him,” Koch said. “He knows we’ve got plenty of game left to play.”

A lopsided win over a I-AA opponent such as Western Illinois guarantees nothing against Southern Mississippi or anyone else on the schedule, Dailey said.

Southern Miss lost 38-14 to the Huskers in Hattiesburg, Miss., last season but rolled off six straight victories to win Conference USA.
